The function of interpersonal communication is to learn all about a person describe yourself to someone that you are communicating with. This site gives various reasons why we try to learn all that we can and describe all that we can about ourselves to someone we are communicating with. We may do it to simply gain information about that person or it may be because we want to establish a certain identity of ourselves.
